New curtains can give your business a facelift, but without proper maintenance,
they'll soon become an office eyesore. Cleaning and maintaining your
window treatments regularly will extend their life so you can get the maximum usage out
of them. Here are a few ways you can keep your new curtains looking as
good as they day you hung them.
Provide Sun Protection
The sun is destructive to any fabric, and chances are that your window
treatments receive more sun exposure than any of the other fabric in your
office. If possible,
consider sun exposure when hanging new curtains. Light colors reflect sunlight and are more
resistant to fading than dark colors, so hang lighter-colored window treatments
in windows that receive the most direct sunlight when possible. You can
protect all of your curtains from sun exposure by adding liners or installing
blinds or shades.
Remove Dust Daily
Dust settles on curtains during the day, so each night, give them a shake
to dislodge the dirt. Failing to do so will allow dust and debris to build
up in the fibers of your window treatments, making them more difficult
to clean. Vacuum your curtains once a month using a soft-brush attachment,
being careful not to damage embellishments. Controlling the dust build-up
on your curtains will keep them looking new and will help prevent allergy
problems in the office.
Spot Clean as Needed
If you get a stain on your window treatments, try to remove it immediately.
Follow the recommendations on your curtain labels when choosing a detergent.
You can also launder your curtains periodically in accordance with the
label directions. After washing your curtains, dry them on low heat or
line dry them. It may be necessary to iron your curtains before you re-hang
them. Iron only on the reverse and spray seams that have puckered with
plain water before using the iron.
